NASA Launches First Squid Into Space

First monkey in space: 1949.
First dog in space: 1950.
First bulfrogs in space: 1970.

First squid in space: 2011. Well it's about time. NASA just launched a Bobtail Squid into space on the Endeavor, but it will be killed in 28 hours and sent back to Earth so researchers can examine it.

The squid was sent to space in order for scientists to study the effect of microbes and viruses in space. A mouse was sent up to space in 2007 and was quickly killed by organ deterioration due to microbes that cause diseases such as Salmonella.
